Exhibition — A Network of Networks

Browse the works and ideas below and consider how you will imagine the network. This is a network of networks and systems. Some are windows that simply open to another collection of windows. Some are automated aesthetic systems—some of which are deliberately looking for the errors and glitches of the system itself.

Cyber PowWow

“First launched in 1997 by the Nation to Nation collective—Skawennati, Ryan Rice, and Eric Robertson—CyberPowWow was one of the first major online art exhibitions. Described as an Aboriginally determined territory in cyberspace, it presented works by Indigenous artists in a multi-user, graphical chat environment.”

The New Aesthetic

“Since May 2011 I have been collecting material which points towards new ways of seeing the world. The New Aesthetic is not a movement, it is not a thing which can be done. It is a series of artefacts of the heterogeneous network.”

La plissure du texte

“Roy Ascott’s telematic artwork explored the potential of computer networking for the interactive, remote, collaborative creation of a work of art — a ‘planetary fairytale’ authored across eleven locations worldwide.”

Wall Drawing 91

“A six-inch grid covering the wall. Within each square, not straight lines from side to side, using red, yellow and blue pencils. Each square contains at least one line of each color.”

Andy Deck - Glyphiti, March 2015

Glyphiti

“Glyphiti is an image composed of many smaller glyphs that can be edited easily. As author, I have established certain characteristics. But the state of every pixel can be changed by the visiting artist.”

Ian Cheng - BOB's Umwelt

BOB (Bag of Beliefs)

BOB (Bag of Beliefs) is the first in a new series of artificial lifeforms, who takes the form of a chimeric branching serpent.

Datamatics

“Using pure data as a source for sound and visuals, datamatics combines abstract and mimetic presentations of matter, time and space.”

Feral Landscape Typologies

A long-running project surveying the spontaneous plant communities that take root in the urban fabric—ecologies of weeds as records of a city’s neglected and contested spaces.

Homeostat Drawing

“Since the late 1950s Willats has employed the diagram as a tool to illustrate dynamic flows of information and relationships within social networks, developed through his interest in cybernetics and Black Box theories.”
